Yet, from his back pocket, he has placed $25 million on the table to tell the world who Jesus is. Obviously, for Mel Gibson, Jesus is revered, although I must admit that previous to the tremendous buzz generated by this movie, I had no idea Gibson’s religious values were this focused. For many, Jesus Christ is nothing more than a blurted expletive. After all, is there any other figure in history that so many people claim to have a personal relationship with? Or, is there any one person who is held in more contempt? His named is called out as the one who is responsible for everything from wars to the injury of one’s thumb by a hammer. Just an accurate depiction of Christs final days and love for us.If there was a vote for the most difficult historical figure to recreate in drama, Jesus Christ must be at the top of the list. There is no nudity, sex, foul language, etc. It would take some pre-movie discussion and an understanding that if it became too much, it could be turned off. I rate it 14+ for not just the violence (that is to be expected), but also for the depiction of Judas' suicide, and the subtitles would be extremely difficult for a younger child to follow.Īs for children under 14: An emotionally stable child with a background knowledge and understanding that Christ was tortured and died for our sins could very likely be able to handle this film. Why? Because how else do you accurately describe how someone could love humanity (me and you!) so much that he would endure torture, humiliation, and death to save our souls? To watch this movie, especially in combination with a Bible study related to the topic, is an incredibly humbling experience. Honestly, I would love to sit down with the whole family and let even my 6 year old see this film. What part of CRUSIFICTION is not violent?

This movie is one of the closest ways for Christians to visualize scripture pertaining to the life/death/resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is not meant to be sexual in nature and cannot be construed that way. Brief nudity when those being crucified are stripped of their garments. Some wine drinking is seen, but that is a cultural necessity as drinking water wasn't widely available. There are no sex scenes, no swearing (if there is it's in Aramaic) or any overt alcohol or drug use. You absolutely get to feel the victory of his resurrection and the incredible loss that hell feels. You are meant to understand the impact Jesus has on Satan, and the huge threat that he is to him. The demonic elements are disturbing and some jump-scare scenes will frighten viewers.
There are catholic themes and some intensely creepy scenes that want you to feel the fear of how present the denomic elements actually are that follow Jesus to the cross, anticipating his demise and teasing and mocking even into death. There are also spiritual elements that allow you to grasp that the devil was absolutely present during that time and he had a deeply vested interest in Jesus' death.
The violence is necessary to tell this story. In the end, a warning for children, it's extremely violent, but it's realistic for a Roman flogging and crucifixion. The rest of the movie is beautifully done. It's also hard to explain why the adults who love Jesus, desert him when he's needing them the most. Many elements can be hard on young viewers namely the entire film is in Aramaic, that alone will be very hard to follow with captions if they cannot read very well. It's very hard to watch her follow her son as he's led to his death and is hanging on the cross speaking to her, which actually happened. There is a scene where his mother Mary is cleaning up after her son, heartbreaking isn't the word. Young children should not see those scenes, this is more for a mature audience. You don't get a real good idea about the men and women who served along side him, but you definitely understand more about what led to his arrest and the fear and threat the Jewish leaders felt by his death and what it meant.Ī very realistic depiction of the flogging and crucifixion scene. It depicts the end of Jesus' ministry and the culmination of the impact made on the Jews who love him and were affected by his life, death and resurrection.
This is a movie we've watched many times over.
